First and foremost, the Cherokee County Democratic Party extends our deepest gratitude to Debra Shigley for running a courageous, principled, and inspiring campaign in the race for Senate District 21. Debra brought unmatched integrity, intelligence, and heart to this race—qualities that were evident to voters across the district every single day.

As a mother of five, a small business owner, and a former attorney, Debra’s candidacy was a reflection of the best of our community. She proved that real leadership isn’t about personal gain or political gamesmanship—it’s about public service. Throughout the campaign, Debra remained laser-focused on the issues that actually matter to Georgia families: lowering everyday costs, expanding access to affordable healthcare, and ensuring every child has a shot at a better future.

Sadly, the same cannot be said of her opponent. While Debra focused on uplifting our community, Dickerson resorted to relentless personal attacks, dishonest smears, and divisive rhetoric. His was the most negative campaign Cherokee County has witnessed in at least two decades—an embarrassing spectacle that insulted the good nature and sensibility of Cherokee County.

Let’s be clear: while Dickerson may have eked out a victory last night, it came at a steep cost—to his reputation, to the dignity of the office, and to the trust of the people he claims to serve. He outspent Debra three to one, only to lose 11 points compared to 2024. That alone speaks volumes. Cherokee didn’t trust him before, and after his scorched-earth campaign, that distrust has only deepened. Voters saw through the spin. They saw a candidate who is untrustworthy, mean-spirited, and nakedly motivated by self-promotion rather than public service.

Debra gracefully demonstrated her unshakable belief in the power of people over politics. She inspired new voters to engage, built bridges with disaffected independents and moderates, and elevated the conversation on affordability and opportunity.

To every volunteer, donor, voter, and supporter who stood by Debra—we see you, we thank you, and we are not done. The Democratic Party in Cherokee County is growing stronger, more united, and more determined every day. We will continue fighting for leaders who lift us up, not tear others down.

We are proud of Debra Shigley. And we’re just getting started.
